Flooding: Turn Around, Don't Drown.
San Antonio floods. A lot. Every year people get trapped in flood waters from attempting to drive through them. In fact, more than half of flood related deaths across the country involve a vehicle.
Don’t underestimate the force and power of water. It only takes one foot of rushing water to carry away a small car, and half of that to knock over an adult. It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters.
When the rain comes down hard:
- Remain aware and monitor local radio, television outlets, and social media.
- Have a plan in place with your supervisor at work for when it rains so much that it affects your ability to drive.
- Avoid roads you know are prone to flooding.
- Stay indoors if you can.
If you have to drive in the rain, remember that what looks like a few inches, may be an entire foot of water. Avoid flood waters at all costs.
By driving through flood waters, you not only risk your own life, but you risk my life. Please, turn around, don’t drown.
